University of Plymouth – Decorative Corten Steel Screen
Project Overview
We were proud to deliver a bespoke decorative Corten steel screen for the University of Plymouth, creating an eye-catching feature wall in a busy area of the campus. Installed to shield the university car park and recycling centre behind, the structure combines practical screening with striking architectural design.
Manufactured to replicate the appearance of Corten blockwork, the finished installation enhances the surrounding environment while providing a durable and low-maintenance solution.

The Brief
Denton-Powell Ltd were asked to design, manufacture and install a decorative screen that would provide visual screening for the University car park and recycling facilities.
The brief required a robust and visually appealing solution that reflected the supplied design specification. It also needed to withstand the challenges of an exposed marine environment, ensuring long-term structural integrity with minimal maintenance.
Project Challenges
The project presented several technical and environmental challenges:
- Designing a decorative feature wall that matched the supplied Corten blockwork aesthetic
- Ensuring long-term durability in Plymouth’s coastal marine environment
- Manufacturing curved panels and supporting steelwork to precise tolerances
- Delivering an efficient on-site installation in a busy university location

Our Solution
To meet the project requirements, all curved panels and support steelwork were rolled in-house to ensure full control over quality and dimensional accuracy.
The screen was constructed using galvanised steel posts and framed Corten mesh panels, assembled on site for a seamless installation. Thanks to our careful planning and precision manufacturing, the feature wall was installed faultlessly.
Corten steel was selected for its ability to form a stable, rust-like protective surface when exposed to the elements. This natural weathering process removes the need for painting and significantly reduces ongoing maintenance, making it an ideal material for external architectural applications.
What is Corten Steel?
Corten steel is a high-strength weathering steel alloy designed to form a stable, protective rust-like surface when exposed to the elements. Unlike ordinary steel, this tightly bonded patina protects the material beneath and significantly slows further corrosion, removing the need for painting or coatings.
Known for its corrosion resistance, strength, and low maintenance requirements, Corten steel is widely used in structural and architectural applications where durability and appearance are equally important. Its distinctive finish and reliable performance make it an ideal choice for exposed outdoor environments. Read more about Corten Steel.
